An irrigation system is a network of pipes lying in the soil, connected to the same supply that feeds the kitchen tap. What keeps the two apart is a single mechanical device, and because it fails without any outward symptom, testing it on a schedule is a requirement rather than a recommendation.
What backflow actually is
Water in a supply line normally moves one way because the main is pressurised. Two things reverse that. A drop in main pressure, from a break or heavy draw such as fire fighting, can siphon water backwards. Or pressure downstream can exceed the supply and push water back into it.
In an irrigation system that reversed water has been sitting in pipes in the ground, in contact with soil, fertiliser and whatever has been applied to the lawn. A submerged sprinkler head in a puddle of treated water is the textbook case, and the backflow device is the only thing preventing that water reaching the house and the street main.
Why it needs testing rather than inspecting
The working parts are check valves and a relief mechanism, and they depend on springs, seats and rubber seals. Those degrade with age, mineral deposits and debris, and the device continues to pass water normally while doing so. There is no leak, no noise and no change in sprinkler performance.
A test uses gauges to verify each check valve holds against pressure and that the relief opens when it should. It takes a certified tester a short time and it is the only way to establish the device is doing its job rather than merely present.

The freeze problem here
The most common reason a Middle Tennessee backflow device fails a test is that it froze. The assembly sits above ground, it holds water, and a hard freeze cracks the body or damages the internal components. A cracked brass body is a replacement rather than a repair.
Winterising the irrigation system properly is what prevents it: the supply isolated, the assembly drained through its test cocks, the ball valves left at a partial angle so any residual water has room to expand, and an insulated cover fitted. Blowing out the lines without draining the backflow assembly misses the expensive part.
What to do and when
Find out from your water provider what applies at your address, because requirements and reporting differ and the obligation generally sits with the property owner rather than the irrigation contractor. Testing is usually annual, and the report is filed with the provider rather than kept in a drawer.
Spring is the natural time, at the same visit that starts the system up for the season, because that is when freeze damage from the winter is discovered. Booking the startup and the test together avoids a second call-out and catches a failed assembly before the system runs all season on it.
